A Caring Supervisor Helps An Employee Address His Heavy Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship
Barry dropped out of high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually found employment at a local metal recycling plant. For the past six-and-a-half years he has gained a reputation as a diligent and hard-working employee who seldom calls off work because of sickness.
Roughly seven-and-a-half months ago he began going out with a lady named Carol. They seemed to get along real well right away and looked like they had a lot of good times with one another.
When Barry met Carol, he hardly ever drank. This circumstance totally changed when Barry and Carol began seeing each other on a fairly normal basis. In actual fact, their relationship was going great until Carol without warning called Barry one night nearly 4 AM and said that she had to stop dating him and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry drove to her condo and found out almost immediately that Carol had already moved out. Barry received this news particularly hard. In reality, he was taken aback because they seemed to be getting along so well.
So what did Barry do about Carol? Rather than working through his anguish and grief, he started getting intoxicated nearly every night. It didn't take long for his buddies at work and for his manager to see that Barry was coming to work late at least once every week and that he continually called off ill. Moreover, some of his fellow employees made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and said that Barry constantly came to work with a strong smell of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.
Barry's boss heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Wednesday afternoon he asked Barry to come into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a profound change in his attendance, behavior, work performance, and in his sick time.
"Barry, I'm not an authority about alcohol facts and I am not particularly well-informed about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen more than a few of my relatives and friends go through some really destructive issues because of their excessive and hazardous drinking. My recommendation is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency can do to an individual."
"Why is this relevant? When people engage in heavy and irresponsible drinking, their drinking issues not only adversely affect the problem drinker, but they also adversely affect her or his co-workers, family, friends, neighbors, and relatives. Barry, in sum, I would like to see you get some help for your heavy and irresponsible drinking from our fine employee's assistance program."
Barry admired his boss quite a lot and as a consequence followed through with his recommendation the next morning when he called and made an appointment with a therapist in the company's employee's assistance program. Even though Barry didn't automatically feel any less depressed or feel better about the sorrow he still feels for Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his boss and his co-workers wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave him some emotional relief for the first time in a number of months and he truthfully experienced some hope that he would get his life back on track.
