Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, The Interrelationship Between Excessive Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Need For Coping Skills Training

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol abuse professionals claim that liquor, wine, and beer advertisements created by the media are a primary reason for the escalation of teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol abuse experts believe that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of alcohol. Still other alcohol addiction professionals affirm that many of our young people engage in harmful drinking because of the increased apprehension that they experience.

From a slightly different perspective, since both parents in many families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision obviously has to play a significant role in the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse. And finally, diverse alcohol abuse professionals assert that the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse is due, in some way, to our permissive society.

One component of teen alcohol abuse that looks as if it lacking in the alcohol addiction research literature, then again, is the lack of educational courses that teach students how to improve upon their coping skills so that their careless drinking behavior is radically reduced or eradicated. Stated differently, scientific research has demonstrated that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and alcohol abuse.

In effect, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the greater the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a correct line of reasoning, why isn't coping skills training a major part of the academic prospectus in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us manufacture a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are trained how to achieve sound coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets challenging, people who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more productive way, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into practice.

Stated differently, students who show evidence of sound coping skills will be more able to think clearly and engage in top-shelf decision making as opposed to students who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop good coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of alcohol abuse.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, what's more, if students not only got first-rate coping skills instruction but also received an excellent education that focused on the long term and short term negative outcomes associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills instruction, it is asserted, would help teenagers avoid the obvious allure of adolescent drinking and, as a result, would notably reduce the injurious drinking behavior exhibited by adolescents in our country.

There are surely several valid reasons why so many of our adolescents abuse alcohol. Such a thorny issue demands a broad based and relevant response by our parents, educators, politicians, and students so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more productive and accountable way instead of resorting to careless and abusive drinking to solve their problems.
