Everyone has their critiques. We start forming likes and dislikes from an extremely early age. Some of our evaluations are formed based on our own experiences & others we form based on what we hear from the people around us. Children readily pick up what the adults around them are saying. This is the reason most family members belong to the same political party & practice the same religion; it's what they grew up with. A whole lot of what we value comes from what we were exposed to as kids. Sometimes we find that we change our opinion on something once we have experienced it for our-selves because the opinion was based upon what we were taught rather than from individual experience.

In the family I spent my childhood in my dad liked to have things quiet. He worked very hard at his job and running a piece of farmland so when he sat down for the evening he did not like a good deal of noise or activity going on around him. We could have the tv on low or he would put on tapes of classical music. It was the only music he would listen in to. If we had the radio on & country western music, even country wedding songs, or rock and roll would come on he would say to us to turn it off. He did not understand rock & roll and he thought country western music was cheesey, even the love ballads & country wedding songs. I was exposed to rock & roll through my friends, radio and dances and like it. I didn't listen to country western music at all. I held my dad's opinion of it. Then I started a dating a youthful man in college that listened to country western music all the time. He liked the beat of the music & the stories that the majority of of the songs told.

I really liked him so when we started dating I put up with the music & tuned it out. We then went to a large outdoor music show that featured several of the hottest country western bands. From that time on I was hooked. I found that I also liked the stories the songs told & the music was entertaining to dance to. At the outdoor music show event I met several of my boyfriend's friends. They taught me how to line-dance to some of the songs. I slow danced to some ballads and country wedding songs. After university I moved to another city & so I lost touch with my boyfriend. Ultimately I married my present husband and we are raising our family. I still listen to all manner of music, but every time I hear western-country music I think back to that music show & how I came to appreciate it. I try and let my children experience quite a few different things growing up and try not to influence their critiques.
